The Bernoulli Effect

Daniel Bernoulli was a well known mathemathician who discovered the relationship between speed and pressure. What does this discovery have to do with South Florida where I have lived for the past 30 years? HURRICANES (not the football team).

Let me explain. As a plane speeds down the runway air is forced under the wings and creates uplift on the wings of the gigantic aluminum cylinder to which most of us will entrust our lives to transport us during this holiday season.

During a hurricane, the wind can blow as much as 150 miles an hour creating heavy duty uplift forces on the roof and walls of a house. I know that you know that wind and water act similarly and they will always find their way out. If the trusses in your home are not properly anchored to the walls you could lose your roof during a storm.

Consider the below picture that shows the tracking of tropical cyclones dating from 1851 to 2005. You can barely see the state of Florida or the Caribbean slands.

What can you reasonably do to make your home less vulnerable to these storms?
Easy, I will share it on my next blog post.
